VFS Global is the official outsourced partner handling German national visa appointments and biometrics collection in India — you don’t walk into a German consulate directly. Here’s the actual booking process, based on VFS Global’s own portal guidance and the German Missions in India’s instructions.
Before You Book: Complete Your Application Groundwork First
The German missions’ checklists are explicit that you should prepare your full document set — training contract, language certificate, financial proof, and so on — before filling out the application form and booking your appointment, not after. Booking a slot before your documents are ready just burns your appointment window. See the full document checklist for the Ausbildung route in our complete process guide.
Step 1: Create an Account on the VFS Global Portal
Bookings go through VFS Global’s dedicated portal for Germany applications from India. If you don’t already have an account, you create one; returning applicants simply log in.
Step 2: Select Your Visiting and Residing Country
You specify Germany as your destination and India as your country of residence, then select the VFS Global application centre nearest to you or covering your jurisdiction — note that VFS centres are typically tied to specific regional consular jurisdictions, so you need the centre that actually serves your state, not simply the nearest one geographically.
Step 3: Choose the Correct Visa Category
Select the category matching your actual purpose — vocational training, job-seeker, employment, family reunion, and so on. Choosing the wrong category at this stage causes downstream document-checklist mismatches, so confirm you’re selecting the same category your documents were prepared for.
Step 4: Enter Your Personal and Passport Details
Have your passport on hand — you’ll need to enter your passport number and other identifying details accurately as part of the booking.
Step 5: Select an Appointment Date
A calendar interface shows available slots. Appointments can generally be scheduled up to three months in advance, but not later than roughly two weeks before your intended travel date — plan your booking window around your desired start date in Germany, factoring in the processing time afterward (see our processing time guide). If no slots are immediately visible, VFS’s system may offer a waitlist option that notifies you by email when a slot opens.
Step 6: Attend With Your Complete Document Set
Bring originals of everything on your visa checklist, not just the copies you uploaded — the German missions’ guidance is explicit that incomplete documentation at this stage can result in rejection. This is also where biometric data (photo and fingerprints) is typically captured as part of the national visa process.
Getting Help
If you run into issues using the booking portal itself, VFS Global provides a dedicated hotline for applicant support — check the current contact number listed on the official VFS Germany-India portal, since support numbers can change. Avoid third-party “assistance” services offering to book slots on your behalf outside the official portal; use only the official VFS Global booking channel.
What Comes Before and After
Booking your VFS appointment sits in the middle of the overall process — after you’ve assembled your documents and before your interview. See the full application sequence for what happens on either side of this step, and what the interview itself actually checks. If your appointment doesn’t go as planned, our post on rejection reasons and how to reapply covers the documented grounds and what changed in the appeals process in 2025.

Where This Comes From
Booking process details are drawn from VFS Global’s official appointment booking portal for Germany applications from India, and from the German Missions in India’s application guidance published via india.diplo.de, including their explicit statements on document completeness and interview attendance. Booking windows and centre assignments are administrative details that can change — confirm current rules directly on the official VFS Global Germany-India portal before booking.
