Ausbildung Visa Processing Time from India

“How long will my Ausbildung visa take?” doesn’t have one honest single-number answer, and the German Missions in India’s own guidance treats it as a range that depends heavily on one specific variable: whether your training arrangement has been pre-approved by the Federal Employment Agency before you apply.

The Two Scenarios the Missions Describe

According to the German Missions in India’s published guidance, if your application does not have pre-approval from the Federal Employment Agency, it has to be forwarded to the competent immigration authority in Germany for a decision, and that step alone is described as taking approximately six to eight weeks. If you do have pre-approval in hand before applying, the missions describe a much shorter processing time — approximately ten days.

That’s a large gap, and it’s the single biggest lever you have over your own timeline. Under §16a AufenthG, Federal Employment Agency consent is generally required for the training arrangement itself, per §39 AufenthG — the missions state explicitly that getting this approval in advance is “not mandatory,” but that it “can shorten the time to process your application significantly.” In practice, this means working with your employer to initiate that approval step as early as possible rather than leaving it for the visa stage.

Why You Shouldn’t Treat Either Figure as a Guarantee

Processing times published by consular missions are administrative estimates, not legal deadlines — they can shift with application volume, staffing, seasonal demand, and how complete your documentation is on first submission. The missions’ own checklists warn that submission of incomplete documentation, or refusal to appear for a visa interview, can result in outright rejection rather than just delay — which is a much bigger timeline risk than a few extra weeks of processing. We cover what triggers rejection specifically in Germany Visa Rejection Reasons and How to Reapply.

What Actually Adds Time Before the Clock Even Starts

The processing-time figures above only cover the period after you’ve submitted a complete application. Before that, you need:

  • A signed training contract and training plan in hand (see the full application process)
  • Language documentation at the required level, or an accepted alternative
  • Financial proof sorted — opening a blocked account, if you need one, is its own multi-step process; see our guide to the blocked account
  • A confirmed VFS appointment slot, which itself can take time to secure depending on demand at your regional visa centre — see how to book a VFS appointment

Building in time for these upstream steps, not just the official processing window, is what actually determines whether you make your intended start date.

Practical Planning Guidance

Given the range the missions themselves describe, a reasonable planning approach is:

  • Start document collection and language preparation the moment you have a signed training contract, not after
  • Ask your employer whether they can pursue Federal Employment Agency pre-approval before your visa appointment
  • Book your VFS appointment as early as your documentation allows — appointments are typically bookable up to three months ahead
  • Treat six to eight weeks as the baseline expectation without pre-approval, and build a buffer beyond that rather than booking flights immediately after your appointment

Where This Comes From

Processing-time guidance in this post reflects the German Missions in India’s published statements (via india.diplo.de) on vocational training visa applications, distinguishing pre-approved and non-pre-approved cases. The Federal Employment Agency approval mechanism is set out in §16a AufenthG in conjunction with §39 AufenthG. Because processing times fluctuate with application volume and mission capacity, treat the ranges above as current guidance rather than a fixed promise, and confirm the latest estimate on the official portal for your specific jurisdiction before finalising travel plans.
