Yes — and the reason is simpler than most guides make it sound. IELTS measures English proficiency. It exists because English-speaking countries — the UK, Canada, Australia — use it to assess international students and skilled migrants. Germany’s Ausbildung visa was never going to ask for it, for the same reason a German employer wouldn’t ask for a Hindi test: it isn’t the language the job or the training is conducted in.
What the actual visa checklist asks for
We read the German Federal Foreign Office’s own vocational training visa checklist for missions in India directly. Its language requirement is a certificate of German language skills at B1 level or above, from a recognised body such as the Goethe-Institut, telc or ÖSD — or, alternatively, written confirmation from your employer or training school that your German was checked and found sufficient, or confirmation you’re enrolled in a preparatory German course. IELTS, TOEFL, or any other English test is not mentioned anywhere in the requirement, because English proficiency isn’t what the visa or the training is assessing.
Why this question comes up so often anyway
IELTS is deeply associated with “going abroad” in India generally, because it’s the gatekeeper test for the most commonly discussed study and skilled-migration routes — the UK, Canada, Australia. It’s a reasonable question to ask when Germany enters the conversation. The honest answer is that Ausbildung sits outside that entire IELTS-based system. You are not being compared against an English-language benchmark at any point in the process.
The real preparation is German, not English
Both your training contract and your classroom instruction at the vocational school are conducted in German, so this isn’t a technicality you can route around — it’s the actual skill the training depends on. Most of our candidates start from little or no German and reach B1 (B2 for healthcare and banking routes) through structured preparation before they travel. That is the real timeline question to be asking, not whether an English test is required.
