telc B1 vs Goethe B1: Difficulty, Cost, and Acceptance

Both certificates satisfy the same visa requirement. Where they actually differ is exam format, not how seriously either one is taken.

If your only goal is a B1 certificate that satisfies Germany’s Ausbildung visa checklist, both telc Deutsch B1 and the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 do the job equally — neither is named as preferred over the other on any official visa documentation we could find. The real differences between them are structural: how the exam is delivered, not how much it’s worth once you’ve passed it.

Format: modular vs. single-sitting

The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 exam is modular — its Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, and Sprechen sections can, depending on the exam centre, be taken individually or combined, and a section you fail can potentially be retaken on its own rather than repeating the whole exam. telc Deutsch B1 is structured differently: a written exam (reading, listening, and language-element sections) followed by a paired oral exam within the same exam appointment, rather than separately bookable modules. If the idea of a single long sitting feels more manageable to you than juggling separate module bookings — or the reverse — that’s a genuine, personal reason to prefer one format over the other.

The speaking (Sprechen) section, compared

Both run the oral component as a paired exam of roughly 15 minutes. Goethe’s version splits into a conversation about an everyday topic plus a short presentation with follow-up questions. telc’s oral component follows a period of supervised preparation time before the paired conversation itself. Neither is meaningfully “easier” in a way that should drive your choice — both require real-time production with a partner, which is the actual skill being tested regardless of which provider’s format you sit.

Difficulty: same level, different feel

Because both exams are built against the same CEFR B1 descriptor, neither is officially “harder” — they’re calibrated to the same competency standard. What candidates often experience as a difficulty difference is really a format-fit difference: someone comfortable with structured, modular testing may find Goethe’s format more forgiving, while someone who prefers to get the whole exam done in one sitting may find telc’s single-session structure less stressful to prepare for logistically. Neither preference is evidence that one exam board sets an easier bar.

Cost

We looked for a fixed, published exam fee from both official sites and couldn’t find one that holds reliably across India — Goethe-Institut’s own India pricing pages generate fees dynamically per centre and exam date rather than listing a static number, and telc’s fees are set individually by each licensed exam centre rather than fixed centrally by telc itself. That means neither exam has one “correct” India-wide price to quote, and any number you see cited elsewhere (including on some third-party blogs) may not reflect your specific city or date. The reliable approach is to check current pricing directly through your local Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan centre or the telc examination centre finder before registering for either.

Acceptance

Both are named directly on official German visa documentation. German missions’ language-certificate guidance lists Goethe-Institut e.V. and telc GmbH (alongside ÖSD and others) as recognised providers, and the checklist used by missions in India for the German national visa’s language-course track names both Goethe-Institute and telc GmbH explicitly as accepted. telc itself states its certificates are “recognised by universities, companies and state agencies throughout the German-speaking world, as well as internationally.” Neither certificate carries a documented acceptance advantage over the other for Ausbildung purposes.

So which should you choose?

Base the decision on practical factors: which exam has available dates in your city within your timeline, whether your preparation course was built around one provider’s format specifically, and whether you’d rather sit a modular exam you can partially retake or a single combined session. For the full picture of all three recognised providers, including ÖSD, see Goethe vs telc vs ÖSD: which certificate employers accept.

Where this comes from: exam formats are from Goethe-Institut’s B1 exam training page and telc’s official B1 certificate page. Acceptance is confirmed via the Federal Foreign Office’s German national visa language course checklist for India and language certificates guidance. Recognition language is from telc’s “Why telc certificates” page.
