How Long Does an Ausbildung Take? Duration by Profession

Germany's federal training institute sets duration nationally at two to three years, but the real number depends on your trade and can be shortened or extended. Here's what actually determines how long your Ausbildung runs.

The honest answer is “it depends on the trade,” but that isn’t very useful on its own, so here is what actually sets the number, and what it looks like for the sectors we place into.

The general rule

Germany’s federal vocational training institute, BIBB, states that an Ausbildung typically runs two to three years, and that the duration can be shortened or extended on application to the relevant chamber — usually because of prior qualifications, or because your training is progressing faster or slower than the standard schedule. This isn’t decided case by case on a whim; it’s decided by two things: the specific occupation’s Ausbildungsordnung, and, where relevant, an application you or your employer files with the chamber overseeing your training.

Why duration varies by occupation

Every recognised training occupation in Germany has its own Ausbildungsordnung — a training regulation issued by the relevant federal ministry. Among other things, this regulation fixes how long that specific occupation’s training runs, and what has to be covered in that time. A regulation covering a technically dense trade with a long curriculum will run longer than one covering a role that can be competently trained in less time. This is set at the national level for each occupation, not decided per company or per candidate.

Duration by sector, for the routes we place into

  • Nursing & healthcare — 3 years
  • Information technology — 3 to 3.5 years
  • Engineering & mechanical trades — 3.5 years, the longest of our routes
  • Hospitality & hotel — 3 years
  • Food & beverages — 3 years
  • Logistics & supply chain — 2 to 3 years, the shortest of our routes
  • Banking & finance — 2.5 to 3 years
  • Skilled trades — 3 to 3.5 years

Full detail on each, including language level and what the work actually involves, is on our programmes page.

Can it be shortened?

Yes, in specific circumstances. BIBB confirms that duration can be shortened on application where you already hold a relevant prior qualification — an existing degree or diploma in a closely related field is the usual basis — or where your training performance genuinely supports finishing early. This is not automatic and not guaranteed; it goes through the chamber that oversees your specific training contract, on a case-by-case basis. It can equally be extended if you need longer to reach the required standard, rather than being failed outright.

What this means practically: don’t plan your finances or your visa timeline around an early finish unless a shortening has actually been agreed with the chamber in writing. Assume the standard duration for your occupation until you have that confirmation.

What the number does and doesn’t tell you

Duration tells you how long you’re on a training salary and a training-tied residence permit — not how long until you’re independently established in Germany. A three-year skilled trades Ausbildung and a two-year logistics Ausbildung both end with a recognised German qualification; what happens after depends on your sector’s job market and whether your employer offers you a permanent contract, which varies far more by trade and by employer than by how long the training itself took.

Find out your actual timeline

The number that matters for your own planning is specific to your sector and your existing qualifications. Talk to us and we’ll tell you the real duration and timeline for your profile, not a generic average.

Where this comes from: duration rules, the role of the Ausbildungsordnung, and the shortening/extension process are from the Bundesinstitut für Berufsbildung (BIBB), Germany’s federal vocational training institute. Sector-specific durations reflect our own published programme data.
