APS Certificate for Germany: Do Ausbildung Applicants Need It?

This is one of the most common points of confusion for Indian applicants planning Ausbildung in Germany, largely because the APS certificate is such a well-known, mandatory step for Indian students applying to German universities. Based on official sources, the short answer for vocational training (Ausbildung) applicants is: APS certification is not part of the standard requirement. Here’s what the sources actually say, and why the confusion happens.

What APS India actually does

APS India — the Academic Evaluation Centre, run in cooperation with the Science Section of the German Embassy in New Delhi — verifies academic documents and educational qualifications issued by Indian institutions for applicants who intend to study in Germany. Its own published scope describes APS verification as intended for applicants pursuing academic studies in Germany — that is, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD-level university admission. Nothing in APS India’s public FAQ content describes a role for vocational training (Ausbildung/Berufsausbildung) applicants.

What the official Ausbildung visa checklist actually requires

The German Mission in India’s own service page for the vocational training visa lists the required documents: a valid passport, proof of German language skills (A2 minimum, B1 for medical professions), the signed training contract and registration confirmation, a motivation letter, school leaving certificates (10th and 12th mark sheets), and proof of health insurance. An APS certificate does not appear anywhere on this list.

Why the confusion exists

Indian applicants researching Germany online encounter APS constantly, because it is genuinely mandatory for the far more common pathway — university study. Many unofficial guides and consultancy blogs then generalise “you need APS for Germany” without distinguishing between the academic and vocational pathways, which have separate visa categories, separate document requirements, and separate governing rules.

The one situation worth double-checking

Some training paths in Germany combine practical Ausbildung with a university-level qualification — a “duales Studium” (dual study programme) that leads to both a vocational qualification and an academic degree. Because these programmes have an academic admission component, it is worth asking the specific German Mission or the university involved directly whether APS applies to that particular programme, since the standard Ausbildung visa checklist described above applies to straightforward vocational training, not to combined academic-vocational routes. If in doubt, confirm directly with APS India or your visa-processing mission before assuming either way.

What this means practically

If you are applying for a standard Ausbildung (dual vocational training with a company and Berufsschule, not a dual study degree programme), you do not need to budget time or money for APS certification as part of your visa preparation. Focus instead on the documents that are actually required — see our full documents checklist — and on getting your existing certificates properly apostilled and translated, which is a genuine requirement.

For the complete application process, see how to apply for Ausbildung in Germany from India, or explore programmes on our Ausbildung programmes page. If your situation involves a dual study or academic-component programme, contact us and we can help you check the specific requirement.

Where this comes from

This answer is based directly on APS India’s official FAQ page, the APS India homepage describing its scope, and the German Mission in India’s official vocational training visa checklist, none of which list APS as a requirement for Ausbildung applicants.
